Paging Dr. Pet! Top 10 Ways Pets Improve Your Life and Health

If you have a pet in your home, you belong to the 62% of all US households. It’s true, well over half of the US households share their space with a pet companion. Studies have shown that sharing your life and home with a four legged companion reduces stress, aids in happiness, and provides a life time of smiles and laughs. In fact, for nearly 25 years, research has shown that living with pets provides certain health benefits. Pets help lower blood pressure and lessen anxiety. They boost our immunity. They can even help you get dates.

“Studies have shown that Alzheimer’s patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home,” says Lynette Hart, PhD, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Continue reading

Pet Diary: Chief

Visit Date: 9/13/10
Visit Type: Daily Dog Walking

Chief and I got into the spirits of the day by getting out in the breezy, sunny day and enjoying every minute of it. Chiefs visits, as are all of our visits, are tailored exclusively to him and he had the pleasure of getting our signature Brush-n-Massage that includes a stimulating massage getting the flow of his blood moving and a healthy deshedding of all the dead fur he’s carrying around with him. I have to say, the amount of hair I got off of him today was astounding and would’ve probably been made into a small version of Chief the Mastiff.

Completely satisfying all of Chief’s needs (#1 and #2) we found our way home for some refreshments. He indulged himself in a the coolest and freshest water out of the squeakiest, cleanest bowl and a treat especially for him. For a gorgeous face, even after the water, I gave him a good wipe of the mouth, nose, and eyes. You could almost see him feeling gorgeous and proud.

It was my absolute pleasure, as always, to work with Chief. The natural alternative to a bored dog is your friendly pet sitter!

Chief was so cute looking out of the window expecting my arrival this morning. He makes me smile each day! We took our usual route on our walk and had lots of time to have Chief go #1 and #2. We stopped about half way and hung out on a patch of grass and cuddled as I brushed the dead hair off of him. I cratled his gigantic head in my lap and even had him sit on me like a lap dog (120 lb lap dog) on my knees. He loved every minute of it! Everything was pretty quiet on our walk and we simply enjoyed the ending days of warm weather.

At home I washed out his bowls and gave him a treat for being an extra good boy heeling all the way and walking like an angel. He enjoyed his fill of fresh water fully! After I wiped his face and threw away the trash I was on my way.

It was a gorgeous morning to walk with my man Chief!

With a cool 71 degrees we really are enjoying this weather to the fullest! He was ready to go when I came in and didn’t even bother to bring me toys or show off his mischievous side. He just sat and smiled as if to say, “I’m ready, lets go!”

We took our usual route and listened to Pandora radio on my phone. He seems to be listening as I catch him turning his head with the song changes. But maybe it’s just me. Either way that look he throws back at me sometimes is the cutest! I keep trying to catch it on camera but its hard to walk and snap off good shots. We walked with no incident unlike yesterday and even got a few waves along the way. Chief took the walk opportunity to go #1 but surprisingly there was no #2. I had two bags with me and everything! Hope he is feeling OK.

At home I washed out his water dish and refilled it with fresh water that he indulged in for at least 2 minutes straight. Thirsty boy! When he was done I wiped his mouth and refilled his water once more to have it as drool-free as possible. Before I let myself out I noticed he was engrossed with something under the kitchen counter by the stove and upon further investigation I discovered that he was after something loose and looked like rock salt. With a quick correction he left it alone and went to lay with his toy and see what I was going to do. With combined efforts it was vacuumed and cleaned up.

The home looks good and everything is quiet.

Chief and I walked in the cool autumn infused air and enjoyed the breeze. He pranced along with his nose high in the air catching smells from far and wide.

As always, he took the opportunity to go #2 twice! Of course he marked just about everything along the way. I really do try to keep him off of landscaped lawns but some people are just too much. A woman comes out of her house seriously asking me “Why are you walking your dog here?” Are you kidding me? He was on the sidewalk. He was behaving and just getting some time in the shade since it’s only a short distance that gets this 100 lb baby winded. But we kept our heads held high and just kept it moving.

He had a great grin on his face when we got home. He knows me so well that he sat by the kitchen counter that holds the Bounty paper towels and waited for me to wipe his face, concentrating on his drool and eyes (not in that order). He sprawled out just as I was done and didn’t move in my presence aside from the lick of his chops every once in a while. It’s safe to say he is happily tired. I gave him a misting of skin soothing doggy cologne and was on my way.
