Paging Dr. Pet! Top 10 Ways Pets Improve Your Life and Health

If you have a pet in your home, you belong to the 62% of all US households. It’s true, well over half of the US households share their space with a pet companion. Studies have shown that sharing your life and home with a four legged companion reduces stress, aids in happiness, and provides a life time of smiles and laughs. In fact, for nearly 25 years, research has shown that living with pets provides certain health benefits. Pets help lower blood pressure and lessen anxiety. They boost our immunity. They can even help you get dates.

“Studies have shown that Alzheimer’s patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home,” says Lynette Hart, PhD, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Continue reading

Pet Diary: Jake

Visit Date: 9/20/10
Visit Type: Pet Sitting

Jake was dancing with excitement for his midday walk! He was amlost talking as he twirled around me. We took a great walk in what seems to be the perfect weather. He explored along the way trying to resist the chase in him at the sight of a squirrel. We walked around the lake and the neighborhood and Jake took the opportunity to go #1 and #2 which we disposed of in the doggy trash.

He got a cookie and was most pleased to be home happily panting away. He drank and drank fresh water till he dropped by the door and lay there smiling. All is well at home.

Pet Diary: Jake

Visit Date:  9/13/10
Visit Type: Dog Walking

Jake was vocal and super happy to see me today. He jumped up and down and was really ready to go out and play! And why shouldn’t he? The weather is perfect!

We walked around the neighborhood practicing “heel” along the way. We walked around the lake exploring new smells are pockets of areas we’ve missed in the past. He stalked a few sqirrels and geese but overall was a good boy. He went #1 and #2 on our extra long walk this afternoon.

Once inside he drank lots of fresh water out of a clean bowl and followed up with a few lessons on “go to bed”. He is getting much better, though gets up too soon. Mom and dad should work on the time he sits in his bed area before he is able to get treated. That should help.

We spent some time cuddling and just enjoying the company. Jake loved getting a good back rub while I talked to him about my day.

After a few runs on his command reinforcements we hugged and promised to miss each other till next time!

Pet Diary: Ethel and Lucy

Visit Date: 9/10/10
Visit Type: Cat Sitting

I was greeted by a meow and a curl of the tail from Ethel as she slicked away somewhere. This is  more than I got on my walk in since the first morning they confused me for mom and dad. She shows more and more now since I think she associates me with the food being refilled.

The visit is pretty smooth flowing for us now. I soaked the dishes in hot water and soap while I checked out to see the stillness of the home. Everything remains untouched and pretty much the same with the exception of maybe the toy locations. After cleaning out the kitty potties I refilled them both with fresh litter and sealed the garbage bag with the waste. For peace of mind I checked under the bed for shy Lucy only finding Ethel had dibs on that spot. Ethel wasn’t there. I did however spot her under the couch in the furthest spot to the corner. She was looking at me like I was crazy but there was relief to see her little face!

With a smile in my heard I made my way back to the kitchen sink and washed out the bowls. As I was refilling the water with Britta purified water and divided 2 scoops between 2 cat food dishes Ethel meowed and purred at my legs! I was so happy to see her finally make it down. I was beginning to think she wasn’t going to come out at all. She sniffed around, scratched her neck, head-butted her toy and was, once again, on her way up. To my pleasant surprise I saw them both at the top of the stairs staring down at me, calmly swaying their tails. They even posed for some photos that I was so thrilled to have captured even if it was with my phone camera!

It was a great morning with the weather reaching to low 70′s today. It’s was great to see them both today!!!

P.S. There were some papers blown off of the refrigerator that are not on your kitchen counter near it.
